10 step on how to plan a US RV trip?

Alright, now where to start? Planning your  USA RV trip can definitely feel like a lot work to make it a successful one. We have been there more than once. Solution number one is simple, just pack a bag, get to the US and find a place to rent a RV and see what happens. Well, you might overcome the planning-part of a US RV trip, but this solution is definitely not what we recommend as you will loose a lot of time for joyful adventures when on the road. To start  your planning of your US RV trip we fitly recommend to consider the few  steps mentioned below (1-5), and then afterwards you will be ready to dive further into the planning of your US RV trip (6-10).

  1. Length of the US RV trip? When planning your RV trip USA you need to consider for how long you want to go as this will influence the rental of RVs and the route you can go.

  2. Budget. Before starting your research in depth you also need to outline a budget. What is your total limit for an RV trip in USA?

  3. Dream destinations? Start dreaming a bit. Maybe you already know some of the USA National Parks you want to visit, a specific Highway you want to pass or a specific Monument you have always dreamed about. If not, start brainstorming, search Instagram, Pinterest, ask friends, colleagues and so forth. As you get ideas note it down to make sure you do not forget them and to get flow in your dreaming. This will make you more motivated to continue planning your USA RV trip. Personally we always use the Notes app on iPhone which helps us ensuring we always have a notebook by hand when getting ideas for where to go.
If you do not dream about any specific place yet, but just dream about experiencing the american RV lifestyle you could get inspiration from the listed routes later in this blogpost.

  4. Whom are you going with? When planning a RV trip to US you also need to be sure about whether you are traveling solo, family, with a partner or with one, two or more friends as this will influence the size of your motorhome and the vibe of the trip. Do some considerations about what YOU want to get out of this trip and how you will get the best possible experience from this RV trip. This is crucial to know when you plan a US RV Trip.

  5. Help from travel company? The big quiestion when considering how to plan a US Campervan roadtrip is definetely also whether you want to plan it by yourselves or you want professionals to help you out. Collaborating with agencies will influence your budget for sure, but also you will get very helpful information, itineraries and so forth saving you a lot of time. Teaming up with a specialized travel company will often also make it possible to get “help” on the road, if x destination is suddenly closed, if nature catastrophes influence your route or something third. You never know! It may give some extra security, especially if you are a first timer. Personally we highly recommend to take a chat to Michael Jensen, prior owner of Pacific Tours. He is such a star and very experienced within motorhome trips in USA and Australia as well. Let us know for contact information.

If you decide to plan your US RV trip yourself, continue your reading to be prepared to go.

  6. Before renting a RV.  Are you old enough to drive a RV yourself? Driving experience? Do you have the right insuances? Do you have the right drivers license?

  7. Renting a RV in USA.  You need to find out what type of RV you would like to rent? Also you should decide from what company you want to rent it from? And then you must look into, what you are willing to pay for the rental itself.

Renting a RV in the USA

Ready to rent a RV in the US? Yes you are. Below you find answers to most of the frequently asked questions regarding renting a RV in America like how old you must be, whether you need a special license, where to rent RV in USA and how much it costs. Renting a RV might feel overwhelming, and even more intimidating to drive it, but really it is not when you are first on the road. Go rent a RV in USA!

How old to rent RV USA?

Embarking on a amazing RV trip through the landscapes of America is a dream for many, but you are so right, there is something regarding age to take notice of when considering how to travel with, renting and driving a RV in USA.  Before you hit the road, it’s essential to be aware of the age requirements set by most RV rental companies.

Typically, the age requirement to rent and drive an RV or camper in the USA is 25 age old. Most rental agencies maintain this age limit for insurance reasons. However, there are some companies like CruiseAmerica, EspaceCampervans and JUCY Rentals that allow individuals as young as 21 age old to rent an RV. Although this might come with additional fees or insurance premiums at some rental agencies.

Remember, while you might be old enough to rent an RV, there are also other factors to consider to make it a successful USA motorhome Trip:

  1. Driving experience? Having prior driving experience with especially larger vehicles can be a huge benefit and comfort even if you meet the age requirement.  Driving a bigger RV is different from driving a regular car. So please, familiarize yourself with the vehicle before embarking on your journey, so that you and your fellow travelers feel safe and can enjoy every moment of the trip.

  2. Insurance is highly important! Ensure that you are adequately insured in relation to age and experience. RV rental agencies typically offer insurance packages, but it’s also a good idea to check with your insurance provider about any coverage you might already have. The prices differ very much so try ask more different suppliers.

  3. License is crucial! Always check with the rental agency about license requirements. Later in this article you will find more information about this, but also be aware about that there might be different standards depending of the country from which you have gained the driver license

If an RV trip is on your bucket list, planning ahead is crucial. Make sure you’re of legal age, are familiar with the vehicle and have the necessary documents in place. This will not only make your travel USA in a camper experience smoother but also ensure you’re on the right side of the law.

So, are you ready to embark on your dream USA motorhome trip? The open roads of America await you!

Do you need a special licence to rent a motorhome?

When it comes to the allure of the open road during a motorhome road-trip in USA questions about licensing often arise.  Before you travel USA in a camper, you need to ensure you’re driving legally and safely. Take note of the following when planning a US RV roadtrip.

Standard Licenses are often enough
For the majority a regular state-issued driver’s license will suffice. Though, when renting a RV in USA you will quickly find out there are more different campers to choose from in regard to sizes. In general you will find three different classifications called Class A, B, and C, which are all motorized RVs. And most Class B and Class C motorhomes and even several Class A motorhomes don’t require any specialized licensing as long as the motorhome is 40ft or less, but…

Know Your RV Classes
However, diving deeper, you will see that if your RV trip involves a heavier vehicle, there might be additional requirements in relation to licenses:

  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL). While it’s more the exception than the norm, some states might require a CDL for larger Class A motorhomes, especially if they weigh more than 26,000 pounds, but this will probably not we be the case for you.
  • Special non-commercial licenses & Variations across states? Also, there are about 10 states in the US, like Texas and  California, who have distinct non-commercial licenses for bulkier RVs. So if you’re planning to travel USA in a camper of significant size, it’s wise to double-check these requirements. However, if you’re complying with the licensing rules of the state where your motorhome is registered, you’re typically in the clear—even when crossing state lines.

Towing tales

Planning to travel with a towed vehicle or trailer behind your motorhome? Whether you need a special license may change based on the combined weight, adding another layer of consideration to your RV trip preparations. Be aware of this.

International driving permit for  international travelers
Coming from abroad to the US and want to rent a motorhome? For those having a driver license in another language than American, an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home country’s driver’s license is often needed. But just  check with your RV rental agency for specific guidelines prior to arrival.

Final tips for license when renting a RV in USA
As the dream of hitting the American highways in an RV becomes reality, ensuring you have the correct license is the first step. Always consult with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles  or your rental agency to ensure you are ready to hit the road legally. The magic of an RV trip awaits, so prepare right and travel safely! By the way; you should remember to bring your driver license in it’s physical form on your RV roadtrip in the US as you both need it when picking up the RV and in case you have emergencies on the road cause electronic driver licences are not accepted everywhere.

Now go rent that RV!  Wondering where to rent it? Read on, we got you.

Where to rent RV in USA?

You have a lot of different options for renting a RV in the US. You can rent from big, old brands, from smaller companies or even from privates. It all depends on where you will go in the US as some of the renting companies do only operates in specific areas where others have locations all over the US. Below you find some our our favorites.

  • Cruise America is one of the largest RV rental companies in the USA and offer a wide range of different RVs, campervans, motorhomes and more for rent. They have locations throughout the most of the USA.
  • El Monte RV is so far our go-to RV rental firm in the USA when going on RV adventures over there. They both offer Class A, Class C and luxury RV models.  and also they have locations all over America not to mention they have more than 50 years of experience.  They offered us a very good service and multi-lingual staff which made us feel very safe during the whole process.
  • Road Bear RV offer modern vehicles, plenty of storage and all the luxuries for a fully self-contained adventure in the US. They have 7 locations in the US.
  • RVShare is the place for you to rent, if you want to rent RVs directly from private owners. We really like this concept! RVShare is a peer-to-peer rental platform and you will find a lot of different sizes and prices.

Types of RVs in the US?

When going to travel USA in a camper you obviously need to rent the RV that fits your needs and style the most. In the big picture you will find three bigger categories of RVs in the US and some subcategories. There is something for everyone! Let us have a look at the most popular ones.

  •  Class A motorhomes are the biggest ones and look more like buses. They offer all you need to make it a home on wheels like good kitchen facilities, comftable beds, a small bathroom, a dining and living room. Some Class A motorhome are more luxuries than others but typically they all have more open floor and the most space in the living area compared to other types of motorhomes as they for example come with slide-outs. Slide-outs give you the opportunity to make the RV bigger when park and the walls will be  enlarged through slide-outs.
  • Class B Motorhomes are essentially a converted van offering basic amenities like beds, a small kitchen and sometimes a compact bathroom. They are smaller than Class A making them much more agile when on the road and they are similar to cars in the way they drive.
  • Class C falling in between A and C in terms of size. These types of motorhomes are build upon a truck or van chassis. Typically Class C RVs have a bed above the drivers seat and have more capacity for beds than Class B. Also this type of RV often have a separate bedroom. For that reason many families prefer Class C motorhomes.

Beside Class A, B and C motorhomes you also find travel trailers, pop-up campers and fifth wheel trailers to rent.

When deciding what type of RV for your USA motorhome trip consider how many people you will be traveling, budget, the length of the trip and where to plan to visit. Now you are ready to go rent that RV! Don’t know where to rent RV in USA, jump to this section.

All of this, we elaborate in this section!
On average you should estimate between $75 to $250 per night for for standard RV while it for the luxurious models or larger ones can vary between $300 and $1500 per night. As an example we have made a comparison between three different RV rental companies in the US below ranking the cheapest to the most expensive (Based on pick-ups in California from 23th-30th May 2024) (Prices from 21th September 2023).

Mileages and Gasoline Costs
On the top of the rental cost for the RV itself you must remember to budget for mileages and gasoline too. Normally the rentalcompany will include a certain number of miles for free each day, but if you drive more than that they will charge you a per-mile fee. Our experience is that this can be veery expensive, so we highly recommend to stay within the mileages allowed!  (Because of this, it is also a very good idea to have planned the route roughly prior to the roadtrup so that you know how far you can go each day).
When we plan our route, we always calculate about 5% of the total miles available to be “extra” miles we cannot use for the route. These extra miles you will will need as you beside from driving you planned route also need to go off route for grocery shopping, gasstations, unexpected adventures, if you loose your way and so forth.

Other Costs when Renting a RV in the US
Beside the rental itself, gasoline and miles your budget will also be influenced by where you choose to camp over night. As mentioned you are not allowed to camp  wherever you want in all of the US. If you want full amenities it is a good choice to camp in campsites over night. Campsite spots range a lot in price from $20 to more than $100 per night depending on the size of the RV, the location, facilities and season. Though, in the states where you are not allowed to park anywhere you will be also to find reststops and some parking spots at shopping malls where you will be also to stay for a night or at least some hours for free. We have made a list of places to park your RV when roadtripping USA.

Tip: check apps and the campsite’s homepage for prices
before you ask for a spot at
the reception as we sometimes experienced they charged
us a higher price than informed in there.

Deposits and Additional Fees for RV Rental in the US
When planning your budget for you US RV Roadtrip do also add room for potential costs. The rental company might require a security deposit, which for us was about $1500. Also you will probably need to pay for insurance and potentially extra fees if you would like to have a generator, additional drivers, pets onboard, sheets, an so on.

Can you sleep in a Motorhome while driving USA?

Short answer short. No. Even though it sound like an epic roadtrip you cannot lay down in your bed sleeping when driving on your USA Motorhome Trip. Though you are allowed to sleep if you sit up right in a seat with your seatbelt on. Even in the states where a seatbelt is not required you cannot, as it is not same to go around when sleeping.

Where to park your RV USA?

National and state parks. Many of the National Parks and state parks have their own campgrounds inside the parks. Some campgrounds have a first-come first-serve policy while other open for reservation weeks or months before. The most famous parks like Grand Canyon or Zion get reserved within minutes, so book ahead and be quick. Staying at the campground within the national parks has a fee between roughly 25-50€ USD. You will save money if you stay at a campground outside the national park, but be aware they parks are huge are you will need a lot of time the next day to get inside the center of the national parks. We often choose to pay that little extra money to have the convince of being  in the center of the national park and to save time. This made it possible to us to get up early yo reach the sunrises and stay out in the nature for longer in the evenings to watch the sunsets.

Campgrounds. US offer a huge range of campgrounds where you can park your RV overnight. In the section about apps in this blogpost we have listed two apps that are excellent for finding campgrounds near you. Whether you’re looking for a forested haven or a beachside campground, we are sure there is a spot with your name on it in the US campgrounds.

Retail havens. While not very scenic, many larger retailers like Walmart, Cracker Barrel, and some Costco locations permit overnight RV parking. You will find this convenient for a quick stopover when going from a-b, but we recommend you to prioritize to find real campspots the most of the time to get the most epic memories from your US RV trip. By the way, it is always a good idea to check with the store management before settling down.

Harvest hosts. This is so cool. Why not park your RV in a farm or cool vineyard? With a membership to the Harvest Hosts you can access unique camping spots at 8000+ wineries, farms, breweries, golf courses and private properties that invite Rivers to visit and stay overnight with no camping fees. This way you can meet small, local business owners, enjoy joyful tastings, peek inside working farms and have museum exhibits just outside your motorhome.

RV Resorts. You can also choose to park your RV in USA in a RV Resort. It is a place with a plethora of amenities like cable TV, Wi-Fi, fitness, pool and so. We used Good Sam website to find one of these when in Las Vegas.

There are so many great places you can park your RV in US and a lot of apps can help you find these. We have listed the best apps for rv trips and think you will find some of them useful for parking.

Best RV Apps when on the road

Embarking on an RV USA adventure requires some nifty tools, and we’ve curated the best apps to make your journey smooth and unforgettable. Here are the the essential apps for the ultimate RV roadtrip in the US:

Google Maps – offline version.  Make sure to download the Google Maps app and also download the map in an offline version. Depending on where you go on your US motorhome roadtrip you will probably drive in areas without network once in a while. In these situations the offline version will be your best friend. For example we did not have any internet for 3 days while exploring the Grand Canyon National Park.

KOA might be one of our favorite apps for US RV roadtrips for finding campgrounds. KOA Campgrounds has a huge network of campgrounds throughout the US and when choosing these places to stay, our experience has always been that you can except a certain standard as KOA campgrounds offer consistency in service, amenities, comfort and technology – which is not always the case for many other, smaller campgrounds. As an example you will always have a friendly staff member nearby to support you when you choose KOA. Their app and interactive map gives you easy access to choose between more than 5000 locations across the states and you can book your stay directly in there or find contact information.

National Park Service is a wonderful app when exploring the more than 420+ nationalparks in the US. Think of it as your pocket-sized park ranger, ready to guide you through America’s wonders. In this app you will find interactive maps, tours of parks places, on-the-ground accessibility information and more. The app is made made staff working in the national parks meaning people who know what they are talking about, and also the information is up to date! The best thing is that you are able to download content from the entire parks for offline use which is very handy out there!

GasBuddy. For every RV USA journey, fuel is your trusty steed. GasBuddy is a great app that scouts out the most wallet-friendly gas stations near you, so you can extend your journey without shrinking your budget.

The Dyrt helps you to find campgrounds and campsites. It provides you with all contact information, reviews, photos and more. All of this is free, but if you upgrade to the Pro edition you will also be able to  download specific areas to search from, create campgrounds list for your own trip and once in a while find some discounts.

Spotify, Apple Music and Podcast app. What is a roadtrip without music? Make sure to have your favorite playlist and podcasts right by your hand through music apps like Spotify, Apple Music and your podcast app on iPhone. This will kill the longest hours on road.

Rest Areas – USA is a great app when on the road to have a little rest. It is free to download and will give you a list of facilities for rest ares near you such as Picnic Tables, Restrooms, RV dump, pet walking areas and so forth.

Roadtrippers suggest routes, gauge your fuel expenses, and introduce you to off-the-beaten-path attractions. It’s the ultimate co-pilot! It allows you to enter your starting point of your route and your end location and b that gives you ideas for great stops and attractions along the way.

Campendium is a great help for finding overnight camping spots. You can see photos and reviews from prior campers beside from more other cool features. What we also like very much about this app is that it tells you how the cell phone coverage is on the camp spot, which for us who work remote, is very nice to know.

Beside from these very helpful apps, we have  made a list of what you need to pack for the ultimate US RV trip. Go pack that bag!
