It feels like a journey through time, showcasing all the rich history and culture of another time. We REALLY get why you want to go to Hallstat when in Gosau and in this article we will guide you on how to get from Gosau to Hallstatt. Tucked away in the enchanting Salzkammergut region of Austria, the voyage from Gosau to Hallstatt, is a journey waiting for you with awe-inspiring scenery and a deep cultural tapestry. The easiest way to get to Hallstat from Gosau is in our opinion by car. But you are also able to take the bus or even a taxi. One thing you need to be prepared for is that, due to the many tourists during day time in Hallstat and the location of the tiny historic village in between the mountains; parking has been a huge problem to Hallstatt through years.. And this means that today Hallstat is car-free during day time. In the section below we will guide you on how to reach Hallstat with car and public transport from Gosau.
Going from Gosau to Hallstatt by car you just follow the road to Bad Goisern and the road will take you through a lovely forrest area. The travel time from Gosau to Hallstatt can vary depending on the traffic and weather, but generally the journey by car takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes, covering a distance of around 15 to 20 kilometers (9 to 12 miles).
When you get near the village you will see large signs guiding you to parking lots, and digital displays showcasing the parkingspots available at the time. As the village of Hallstat is closed for cars in the daytime , you are not able to enter the historic center of Hallstat by car. So, the parking lots are what you are looking for.
All you have to do when you arrive to the parking lots in Hallstat is to get yourself a ticket in the machine and find your spot. Later, ehen returning from your adventures in the cultural village of Hallstat, pay your ticket in the machine located near the parking-spots. That’s it!
NB! If you want to stay overnight in some of the accommodations of Hallstat, park in P1 areas and a shuttlebus will take you and your luggage.
You are also able to go to Hallstatt from Gosau by bus. If you go for public transportation, the journey to Hallstatt might take a bit longer than with car, due to the stops along the way and due to a change in bus along the way. Typically, the bus ride will take about 35- 50 minutes.
When in Gosau, take the bus in direction of “Bad Ischl”. Within 20 minutes you will reach the station “Hallstat Gosaymühle” where you need to charge bus to the direction “Dachsteinseilbahn”. It is pretty simple when you are there, so no rush!
Then, hopping on the next bus you will reach Hallstatt within a short time. Here you have two options.
You can either get off the bus at “Hallstat Römische” or at “Hallstat Lahn”. And then, it’s time to explore the wonderful village of Hallstatt. We think you will love it!

To sum up.. Going to Hallstatt from Gosau is simple both through car and public transport. Though you need to be aware that Hallstatt is a car free village in the day time meaning you need to leave your car in one of the parking areas. Going by bus takes a bit longer and you need to change bus one time, but it is easy and you will arrive to Hallstatt within a short time and do not need to rush about parkingspots.
